AI agents in finance: what they can do today, and what still needs you

AI agents can now gather data, run checks and draft the next step across several systems. In finance that is useful and risky in equal measure. A practical look at where they help, where they don't, and how to start.

An AI agent is software that can take a goal, break it into steps and carry them out: look something up, run a check, read a document, draft a reply. Unlike a chatbot, it doesn't stop at an answer. It does part of the work.

In finance, that is promising, because so much of the work is gathering, matching and checking. It is also risky, because the work moves money and ends up in audited accounts.

Where agents help today

Gathering evidence

An exception arrives: a payment that looks like a duplicate. An agent can pull both invoices, the purchase orders, the vendor record and the payment history, and put them in one place for a person to review.

Reconciling and matching

Bank to ledger, intercompany balances, supplier statements. Agents handle the routine matches and leave a short list of real differences.

Reading documents

Contracts, invoices and remittance advices are full of terms that matter. Agents can read them, extract the relevant fields and point to where each value came from.

Drafting the next step

A reminder to a customer, a query to a supplier, a note for the auditors. The agent drafts; a person sends.

Where they still need you

  • Judgement calls. Whether an exception is acceptable depends on context the data doesn't hold.
  • Anything that moves money. Payments, write-offs and journals need a named approver.
  • New situations. Agents follow patterns. A first-time event needs a person who understands why it is different.
  • Accountability. The person who signs the accounts can't delegate responsibility to software.

How to start safely

  1. Pick a narrow, high-volume task with clear rules, such as evidence gathering for payment exceptions.
  2. Keep agents read-only at first. Let them collect and draft, not change records.
  3. Put approval in the flow. Every action that matters waits for a person, as described in People stay in charge.
  4. Log everything. What the agent looked at, what it proposed and who approved it.
  5. Measure the time saved and the errors caught, not the number of tasks automated.

The bottom line

Agents won't run your finance function. They can take hours of gathering and checking off your team’s week, if they are given narrow jobs, clear limits and a person who decides. That is how our AI accelerators are built, and how the ALTeX Hub platform runs them inside your own environment.
